It’s Merkin’s birthday today. He’s now turned The Big 4-0. I asked him if it was really all that bad. He said, “Yes.” If it’s any consolation, Merkin, I don’t think you look 40. But then I’ve always been terrible at determining people’s ages by visual cues. Actually, I’m not sure it’s the growing old that bothers Merkin so much as the realization that BratzBasher is about the same age he was when his dad turned 40. That means someday BB will be 40, and it’s all happening way too fast for his taste.
I never know what to give Merkin for his birthday — or Father’s Day — or our anniversary — or Christmas. (I don’t worry about Valentine’s Day because that’s all about me 😉 ) Usually, he does what my mom always did and buys his own dang present. This year, though, I actually got a fairly good idea. We attended the St. Louis Storyteller Festival this last weekend, and there were a few performers who were offering CD’s for sale. I checked online and found Bil Lepp’s Mayhem Dressed as an Eight Point Buck. Bil Lepp is a five-time champion of the West Virginia’s Liar Contest and his performance at the SLSF was one of our favorites. I downloaded the entire CD in mp3 format and pointed it out to Merkin as he was syncing his Zune this morning. I’m hoping it’s cheering up what has been an otherwise miserable week.
Happy Birthday, Merkin! When BratzBasher gets home, we’ll start on your birthday cake. I promise you’ll get more than one piece this year. No, really!
